The Danube bike path : from Vienna to Budapest

Along the Romantic Danube, discover by bike 2 countries : Austria and Hungary !
Follow quietly the Danube which will bring you to Hungary, with a short journey through Slovakia. Different countries, different landscpades but same wonder !

From Vienna to Budapest, what a beautiful escape !

The tour goes on ground level. Except the part from Tata to Esztergom has two grades of every 3 km.
Total Distance: approx. 343 km

Day 1 - SUNDAY: Arrival in Vienna
Individual arrival to the capital of Austria.

Day 2 : Vienna – Bad Deutsch Altenburg OR Petronell-Carnuntum | about 55 km
After taking over the bikes, leave Vienna. On the dam of Hubertus, cycle via Eckertsau, which has a baroque hunting lodge, to Bad Deutsch Altenburg. In the evening you have the possibility to make a trip to the excavations of the ancient Roman camp Carnuntum. Overnight in Bad Deutsch Altenburg or Petronell-Carnuntum.

Day 3: Bad Deutsch Altenburg OR Petronell-Carnuntum – Mosonmagyarovar | about 60 km
First ride along the southern side of the Danube to the Austrian-Slovakian border. Now you get an impression of this little country. Near Rajka, enter Hungary and arrive in Mosonmagyarovar, also called the town with 17 bridges.

Day 4: Mosonmagyarovar – Györ | 45 km
Cycle through numerous little villages before coming to Györ. Györ has a lot of attractions. The medieval town center is located by the confluence of Raab and Mosoni-Duna. Worth seeing are the Bishops castle with the Gothic Doczy-Kapelle, the cathedral with a bust of St. Ladislaus from the 15th century and the city hall.

Day 5: Györ – Tata | 58 km
Leave Györ through the suburbs and go on cycling through the lowland in the hill country of Transdanubien. Via Babolna and Kocs, come to Tata. Here you can walk round the idyllic Old lake with the moated castle from the 15th century. Overnight in Tata or in Tatabánya.

Day 6: Tata – Esztergom | train trip + 55 km by bike
From Tata to Esztergom the route on the Ungarian side leads over several hilly parts and on bad roads with much traffic. Therefore we recommend to cover the first 18 kilometres by train (the train trip has to be organized by yourself, connections approx. every hour, bicycle transport possible, approx. € 2 per person and approx. € 1,00 per bike, payable on site). From Komárom(H) we cycle over the Danube-bridge to Komárno (SK) and on the Slovakian side of the Danube to Stúrovo (SK) where we cross again over the Danube-bridge to the other side to Esztergom (H).

Day 7: Esztergom – Budapest | 69 km
The last day begins with a look at the basilica of Esztergom, the biggest and most impressive church of Hungary. Leave the town and cycle to the traditional small town Visegrad where you see the ruins of the renaissance castle by Matthias Corvinus. Change the bank and ride along the isle Szentendre until a ferry brings you back to the southern bank into the village with the same name Szentendre. You can see there a lot of small galleries and studios. Now Budapest is not far away (about 15 km). You can also go by train or ship this last 15 kilometres to Budapest (has to be organized by yourself, payable on site, the ship does not depart before 5 p.m.).
We have chosen a nice hotel in the centre of Budapest which is easy to reach with the bike.

Day 8: Budapest
